Handguns are generally classified as revolvers or pistols. The pistol is defined as a handgun having a single chamber which is integral with the barrel, and includes single-shot pistols, semi-automatic pistols and machine pistols. The revolver is a handgun that has a revolving cylinder containing multiple chambers. Although the words "pistol" and "handgun" are often used somewhat synonymously, they are distinctly different in that “handgun” is merely the name of the parent category into which pistols and revolvers fall.

The development of gunpowder in 9^th century China changed the concept of warfare forever. The first ‘guns’ were in essence hand cannons, although they were not fired directly from the hand, but rather from the end of a long handle. By the 15^th century, the first handheld firearms that would be called "pistols" were created in Europe, and by the 18^th century, this became part of the lexicon in reference to such gunpowder-based handheld firearms. As the 19^th century rolled around, revolvers made their debut and have remained in action till this very day. Innovation never sleeps, so the mid-20^th century brought us the semi-automatic pistol followed by infinite variations, as well as more defined naming and categorizing conventions.
